Acne can be genetically-inherited and is the result of several factors occurring in the skin. Stress, excess oil, excess skin cells, bacteria, hormonal fluctuations, and genetics are all factors that can contribute to acne. Aside from the excess of oil secreted by the sebaceous glands, there is a proliferation of cells that clog the pores, trapping oil in the follicle. Bacteria inhabit the follicle and digest the oils, generating waste products which then cause the irritation to the skin. Oilier skin condition tend to experience more acne break-outs because they provide more food for the bacteria. Teenagers’ hormonal changes increase oil production , in turn increasing Acne breaks-outs.
Your acne breakouts could be associated with your environment, hormones, working out (sweating), increased oil production, innapropriate cleansing techniques (not being thorough), stress, etc. Over cleansing the skin can also lead to over stimulation of your sebaceous glands, as well.
What can you do to help your break-out?
Excellent skin care and hygiene are vitally important to remove the excess of oils and bacteria that are associated with Acne. Exfoliate twice a week and use everyday a gentle exfoliation such as Dermalogica daily Microfoliant. Medicated topical products help to regulate sebum production, remove follicle-clogging debris and kill bacteria. In addiction, lifestyle changes can also improve your skin. Reduce stress, drink plenty of water and limit your caffeine and nicotine intake, which may stimulate the adrenaline glands and promote oil production and skin congestion. Avoid picking or squeeze spots, as it will create even a bigger blemish and a scar.
