Men's Skin Care Tips

Is a Man’s Skin Really Different from a Women’s skin?

Besides having facial hair, there are structural differences between a man’s skin and a woman’s skin. Androgen (testosterone) stimulation causes an increase in skin thickness, which accounts for why a man’s skin is about 25% thicker than a woman’s. In addition to being thicker, a man’s skin texture is tougher.

Sebum (oil) and its production also differ. After puberty, sebum production is greater in males than females, which is attributed to androgen secretions and accounts for why men have longer lasting acne.

Regardless of age, men also have a higher collagen density than women. Because collagen content is directly related to the signs of skin aging, it has been said a woman’s skin is about 15 years older than a man’s of the same age.

However, men are less sun savvy than women, meaning they don’t use sunscreens, and this could contribute to why the “15 year” skin age difference is not readily noticed. UV damage from the sun can add years to a man’s skin and negate the benefit of slowed intrinsic aging.

Quick skin tips for men:

Always clean your face – this is something men often neglect, but it’s very important and can help to keep your skin looking vibrant and clear. Try a simple facial cleanser that you can use daily in the shower.

Exfoliate – sometimes cleaning the face just isn’t enough and you need to get deeper into the pores to clean out things such as blackheads. This is where exfoliation comes in handy. Again, exfoliating is something you can do quickly and easily in the shower (after cleaning your face). Make sure you buy the right exfoliant for your skin type (not too grainy or harsh for sensitive skin). Exfoliating your skin also softens the hair follicles, allowing for a closer, less irritating shave.

Moisturize - men’s skin can become quite dry due to shaving, the elements and the lack of a proper skin routine. One of the basic things you can do to help your skin, is to moisturize. Moisturizing the skin help to keep it soft, supple and looking great. It will also protect against shaving rash, spots and simply help your skin look generally better!

Shave carefully – shaving can dry out or even damage the skin. Always shave very carefully to try and avoid shaving rash or cuts. Purchase the correct products for your shave – shaving gel and aftershave that will moisturize and protect your skin.

Wear sunscreen - the number one cause of wrinkles is sun damage and wearing sunscreen is something very simple that a lot of men forget about. Always wear at least an SPF 15 on your face, even in winter.
